Sabbath-Keeping and attending blessings

Picture
  • The Sabbath is not just another day of the week. It is a day that God blessed, sanctified and has commanded us, His Creation, to keep holy.
  • Of the seven days made by God, the Sabbath is the only day God hallowed. He also rested from all His works.
“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made”
Genesis 2:2&3
  • The Sabbath is not a day for the usual preparation as is done on the other days of the week. God taught this lesson by the way He provided for His people.
“ Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.
And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”
Exodus 16:4&5 { see also vs14-29)

  • God will punish those who are unrepentant and break His Sabbath Commandment or use His Sabbath to do their own thing.
“And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day.
And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.
And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him.
And the Lord said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.
And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the Lord commanded Moses.”
 Numbers 15:32-36

  • Sabbath keeping is a Command of God- The fourth (4th) Commandment.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy…” Exodus 20:8-11
  • God’s children keep His Sabbath in obedience/exaltation of Him as God alone.
“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God” Hebrews 4:9

  • God declares blessings on those who keep Sabbath holy in obedience to Him.
“If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it”
 Isaiah 53:13,14.

  • Jesus Christ and His disciples kept the Sabbath.
“And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.” Luke 4:16
“…But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.
And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on…”
 Acts 13:13-16

  • Nehemiah, one of God’s servants, rebuked Sabbath breakers.
“In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals…” Nehemiah 13:15-22

  • The Sabbath is not an ordinary day. It is a day that YHWH-God made holy and has shown, by example, what we should and should not do. When we obey His Commandment by faith, we glorify Him as God alone and we receive benefits or blessings.
