Benefits of Green Papaya (Pawpaw)

Picture
Picture
Often, when the fruit papaya is mentioned it is thought of as ripe, or to be used for cooking your meats or stew.  But how many of you know that green papaya can be eaten raw, make delicious healthy salads, and aids in food digestion and prevent gas?
It’s interesting to know that green papaya has health benefits which can improve your health to a large degree and cause you to want to use it with every salad or every meal.

It was a Sunday afternoon, my beautiful wife and I were doing some research on the benefits of drinking green papaya leaf to cure the dreaded Chikungunya virus that plagued the Caribbean, when we stumbled upon a green papaya salad recipe. After our discovery, we decided to do some research on its value and benefits for human consumption.  This is why I wrote this blog; to share with you the great value and benefits of the green papaya. It is a very healthy fruit to the extent that the papaya tree is dubbed, “THE MIRACLE TREE.” Green papaya converts proteins into essential amino acids, which help to combat fat buildup and boost your immune system; amino- acids is also useful for muscle development. Green papaya also cleanses the colon, fights nausea and constipation. Moreover, it protects the urinary tract in women from infections. Green or unripe papayas are rich in enzymes such as papain and chymopapain; rich in vitamins and phytonutrients. Raw, green, unripe papayas contains essential nutrients and minerals such as potassium, magnesium and Vitamins A,C,B, and E, just to name a few.

Papain: is a powerful digestive enzyme commonly found and extracted from papaya fruit (carica papaya), the papaya enzyme papain plays a key role in digestive processes involving breaking down tough protein fibers.
Chymopapain:  A proteolytic enzyme from the latex of the papaya that is used in meat tenderizer and has been used medically in chemonucleolysis (Spinal cord problem).
Phytonutrients: Are chemicals produced by plant.  Foods with phytonutrients have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Potassium: Benefits of potassium includes better brain function, better muscle function, and lower risk of heart problems, maintains fluid balance, stronger bones improve blood pressure numbers, improve nervous system and more.
Vitamin A:  Has antioxidant properties which protects cells from daily toxic damage of oxidation. Vitamin A is key for good vision, and a healthy immune system.
Vitamin C: Benefits of Vitamin C include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, skin wrinkling and much more.
Vitamin B: These Vitamins help the process body uses to get or make energy from the food you eat, the eight B vitamins are B1,B2, B3,B5, B7, B9, B12.  These essential nutrients help convert our food into fuel allowing us to stay energized throughout the day.
Vitamin E: Reduces cholesterol and the risk of developing cancer.  It also improves immunity levels and removes free radicals-the unstable compounds that damage the cell structure.

Green Papaya Salad

Ingredients
1 Green (unripe) Papaya
3 garlic cloves
1 lemon
2 tsp sugar (to taste)
½ tsp sea salt
11/2 Tsp coconut oil
1 tsb cayenne
2 pimento peppers
Small Tomatoes (optional)
Chopped nuts (optional)

Directions
  1. First prepare the papaya by peeling the dark green skin. Then, hold the papaya in your hand, and smack the fruit lengthwise with a good sized knife. You want to create 1/2″ or so deep cuts into the fruit. Do this over and over until you’ve created a good amount of cuts. Watch your fingers! Then, cut the papaya lengthwise to produce long strips.
  2. In a ceramic mortar and pestle or calabash, add the whole garlic cloves and cayenne pepper and coconut oil (little at a time). Pound with the pestle a few times to mash.

  1. Pound a few more times, and add a pinch of papaya. This helps mix the garlic & cayenne. Pound some more.
  2. Add the brown sugar and salt and pound more. Make sure everything is well mixed.
  3. Add the tomatoes. Pound more, but not as hard. Add the lime juice, pimento and the rest of the papaya.  You want to evenly coat the papaya with the juices while pounding the flavor into the papaya, but don’t pound so hard that the papaya disintegrates. Add the peanuts, mix and serve.

Sweet Jesus...Like Honey

Brethren of Thusia harvest Honey locally in Trinidad
God in his providential goodness, has provided the bounties of nature even in the form of honey which is likened unto the knowledge of Christ who is our wisdom-1 Corinthians 1:30.  For this we are told in Proverbs 24:13,14:

"My son, eat honey, because it is good: and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off".

"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Galatians 6:7.  In farming, only what you plant, you will reap. One will never plant lettuce seeds and reap tomatoes from them. This therefore is a testimony of Nature against deceptions as expressed in the bible verse above.

Charcoal works wonders!

I first learnt about some of the benefits of charcoal years ago during a Sabbath afternoon discussion at Church. A sister was presenting a study on charcoal, quoting extensively from a book “Rx Charcoal” by Dr. Agatha Thrash. Some of the benefits include:
  • Removes toxins from the body, promoting a healthy digestive tract.
  • Alleviates gas and bloating
  • Relieves pain and itching caused by insect bites.
  • Treats rashes and promotes their quick healing.
  • Whitens teeth
  • Reduce acne and improves skin health
  • Excellent for treating diarrhea in children and adults.

The use and health benefits of charcoal have been researched and supported by medical experts in medical journals like the Journal of Medical Toxicology and Adverse Drug Experience (1988).

Picture
My son, Diyahsab and I have personally experienced the advantages of using charcoal especially for stomach pain and diarrhea. When my son was just under one year old, he got diarrhea for the first time. I took him to the doctor and used the prescribed medications for about 2 days without any noted improvement. In conversation with one of my brethren who was inquiring about our well-being, I was advised to give Diyahsab a teaspoon of grated charcoal in a half glass of water. I did just that. I also remembered reading that, it’s best to use warm water and give on an empty stomach. It is said that it is more effective in working faster when done like that. So, I gave him to drink. Within a few hours, the diarrhea was totally checked. I was amazed! I was extremely grateful towards God for giving us these natural remedies and for the advice. With prayerful use of this charcoal remedy, a wonder was wrought! My son had no diarrhea. I think since that time, he had it once. I used the charcoal immediately and the diarrhea was checked almost instantly.
I continue to use charcoal as a regular home remedy. Once my son had a rash. I made a paste with charcoal and a tip of coconut oil. Within two days, the rash had dried up.
Again, I thank God for these healthy home remedies that I have learnt through the faith of Jesus Christ which promotes health reform practices. I am also very thankful for all who commit themselves to learning and sharing these truths out of the love of God in their heart for their fellowmen.

PictureCharcoal Tablets
We must never underestimate, slight or become forgetful of the natural remedies God has provided for us. YHWH loves and knows what is best for His creation. Let us glorify Him as God alone- the all-wise, by obeying all His principles both for spiritual and physical health.
N.B. Charcoal capsules are also sold at pharmacies.

Making Coconut Oil At Home
This week my wife and I made coconut oil at home. I gladly share our knowledge with you.

YHWH God, our Creator and king, when he made us,  made us for his glory Isaiah 43:7. And he made provisions for our health. Do you realise that by the time on the sixth day of creation when God created man, that all that was needed for the sustenance of the newly created beings (male and female) were already provided and in place? Read about the creation story in Genesis Chapter one. Coconut oil has proven to be the best oil for cooking purposes as it does not change into bad cholesterol when high temperatures are reached when heat is applied to it. The moral of this point is, that God’s last day people who keep his commandments and the faith of Jesus, will incur the wrath of the dragon (Rev 12:9 ,17) but endures it and overcomes all without sinning against YHWH, Rev 14:12, 12:11. God wishes that we prosper and be in health even as our souls prosper, 3 John 2. As health reformers we ought to be like coconut oil, and do not bend or change under the high temperatures/fires of the devil’s wrath (persecution). Health reform is not only good but very important to the saints and remnant of God’s last day church who will go into the high ways all across the globe to preach the everlasting gospel.

Method:
  1. Grate coconuts (27 coconuts yielded 2 bottles, 750ml each)
  2. Pour average amount of water into grated coconut.
  3. With clean washed hands, mix grated coconut and water together.
  4. With clean Kitchen cloth or strainer (preferably kitchen cloth, as it gives a better strained product) pour grated coconut mixture into cloth in manageable amounts and squeeze, separating milk from pulp.
  5. Let coconut milk sit overnight for about 8-10 hours.
  6. With clean utensils, remove the cream and oil at the top of the mixture into a clean pot (Iron pot preferably) for boiling.
  7. Boil on medium heat until cream and any water subsides and pure coconut oil is left.
  8. Stir gently while coconut cream and oil is boiling until residue from cream is dried and turns brown.
  9. Remove from heat, let cool and then strain and pour into container.

PictureOur homemade coconut oil.
Some benefits of Coconut oil.

Heart diseases: There is a misconception spread among many people that coconut oil is not good for heart health. This is because it contains a large quantity of saturated fats. In reality, it is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in actively preventing various heart problems like high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. Coconut oil does not lead to increase in LDL levels, and it reduces the incidence of injury and damage to arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis. Studies suggests that intake of coconut oil may help to maintain healthy lipid profiles in premenopausal women.

Weight loss: Coconut oil is very useful for weight loss. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. Research suggests that coconut oil helps to reduce abdominal obesity in women. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and endocrine system. Further, it increases the body’s metabolic rate by removing stress on the pancreas, thereby burning more energy and helping obese and overweight people lose the weight. Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who use coconut oil every day as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight.

Immunity: It strengthens the immune system because it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which research has supported as an effective way to deal with viruses and bacteria that cause diseases like herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. Coconut oil helps in fighting harmful bacteria like listeria monocytogenes and helicobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia.

Digestion: Internal functions of coconut oil occur primarily due to it being used as cooking oil. It helps to improve the digestive system and thus prevents various stomach and digestion-related problems including irritable bowel syndrome. The saturated fats present in coconut oil have antimicrobial properties and help in dealing with various bacteria, fungi, and parasites that can cause indigestion. It also helps in the absorption of other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Dental care: Calcium is an important component of our teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in developing strong teeth. It also stops tooth decay. Recent research suggests that coconut oil is beneficial in reducing plaque formation and plaque induced gingivitis.
